Oscars Submission Forms Due November 12 as Academy Locks 99th Awards Calendar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has set Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 5 p.m. PT as the final deadline for Oscars Submission Forms in the Best Picture, Animated Feature, and general entry categories for the 99th Academy Awards, per the Academy's announcement. Films submitted after that deadline will not be accepted for consideration.

Why the November 12 deadline matters

The submission form is the first hard gate of the awards season, and it arrives earlier than the qualification window closes. A feature film has until Thursday, December 31, 2026, to open commercially in one of six qualifying U.S. metro areas — Los Angeles County; the five boroughs of New York City; the Bay Area; Chicago's Cook County; Dallas-Fort Worth's Dallas and Tarrant counties; and Atlanta's Fulton County — but the paperwork must be in by mid-November, per the Academy's announcement. A distributor or producer that misses the 5 p.m. PT cutoff has no second path to eligibility.

The mechanics are specific. The film's distributor or producer must upload a scanned, signed submission form along with legal billing — the complete on-screen credits — through the Academy's submission website. The form and the release are two separate hurdles: a studio can date a December platform run in Los Angeles and New York, but if the form is not filed by November 12, that run qualifies nothing.

What Best Picture contenders face beyond the form

Best Picture hopefuls carry the heaviest load. Beyond the standard qualifying run — seven consecutive days in the same commercial theater, at least three screenings daily, with one beginning between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. — Best Picture candidates must complete an expanded theatrical run of seven days, consecutive or non-consecutive, in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets no later than 45 days after the initial release date, with that expansion finished by Thursday, January 21, 2027, per the Academy's rules announcement.

The category also requires a submitted Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry form, with the film meeting two of the four standards, by the same November 12 deadline. Distributors and producers may opt out of Best Picture consideration, which removes the RAISE requirement — a choice that trades the marquee category for a lighter compliance burden. The RAISE platform and the submission forms are both accessible online, and the Academy's full rules, standards, and campaign promotional regulations are published on its eligibility page.

Which categories are already closed

The specialty categories are past their deadlines. Entries in documentary feature, international feature, and the short film categories are subject to separate qualifying criteria, and the submission window for those categories has already closed, per the Academy's announcement. The remaining calendar gives the field a defined runway: shortlists arrive Tuesday, December 15, 2026; nominations are announced Thursday, January 21, 2027; and the ceremony is set for Sunday, March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, televised live on ABC and streamed on Hulu in more than 200 territories.

The angle worth watching: the 45-day expansion clock

The Best Picture expansion requirement is the provision most likely to shape release strategy. A film opening December 31 — the last qualifying day — would need its 10-market expansion completed within 45 days, by mid-February, to meet the January 21, 2027, outer limit. Studios planning late-December platform runs now have to build the wide rollout into the awards plan from the start, not as an afterthought. The deadline also lands mid-campaign for fall festival titles, meaning distributors must commit to a Best Picture bid before the season's critical consensus fully forms. The Academy counts more than 11,000 members worldwide; the field they will judge begins taking shape on November 12.
